I recently moved a VMWare image of Ubuntu and found that my eth0 went missing but there was an eth1 now. Apparently udev makes rules based on the MAC address to assign the eth# to the adapter. When I moved the image VMWare asked if I wanted to regenerate the ID, which I did since this was a copy, and it created a new MAC address for the network. In order to clear this out I simply deleted…

/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

After a restart everything went back to working just fine. Enjoy!
